The big trend in sunglasses for 2013 is one that you may have already noticed in the streets: frames will be getting lighter and smaller.
The big frame look, which has been so pronounced in recent years, seems to be going out. Instead, smaller and lighter frames with more of a classic look are coming back into style. This trend for smaller frames seems to be part of a move to more casual sunglasses.
A Focus on the Lense Rather than the Frames
The big focus will be on the lenses of the sunglasses rather than the frames in 2013. Manufacturers will be offering a wider variety of lens and frame colours and lens materials than ever before.
Dolce & Gabbana (D&G) is at the forefront of this movement with its Havana bronzed scaffold and other classic looks. The Italian manufacturer will be offering a number of options, including classic black. It’ll also be offering more colours for its frames than ever before, with over 25 colours for its DD8067 frames alone.
The retro trend will continue into 2013 with some interesting differences. Instead of trying to recreate the pop culture looks of the 1960s, companies like D&G will be focusing on the classics, such as Warrior and Aviator sunglasses.
The Wild Look May Be Over
The popularity of simpler classic looks indicates that the wild and bizarre style we’ve seen in recent years may be coming to an end. Instead of unusual shapes, women’s sunglasses designers will be concentrating on the classics. The accent will be on colour rather than shape.
The classic aviator look will once again become popular amongst men as the modern look fades. Expect to see men drifting back to the Aviator sunglasses inspired by World War II pilots, rather than the funkier big framed look of the postmodern era.
Part of this trend will see a return to darker sunglasses for men. Mirrored glasses will be out, as will be coloured lenses for men, even though they will still be popular with women.
The Wayfarer frame will be back in style for women as well. The classic look means the disappearance of big frames, at least for now. Also disappearing will be the cat’s eye shaped frames and some of the round sunglasses we’ve seen in recent years.
Simplicity Is In
Another thing that might be on the way out, because of the economy, is the coordination of sunglasses and outfits. Instead of a set of sunglasses to go with every outfit, penny-pinching ladies will want just one or two pairs of basic sunglasses. That, of course, points to the return of the classic look.
As we noted above, D&G is betting on brighter coloured frames for 2013. The company is figuring that women want something simpler and more basic, but they also want to set themselves apart. That would indicate bright coloured frames with a real classic look.
Finally, the disappearance of sunglasses coordinated to outfits will probably put a damper on the demand for disposable plastic sunglasses. The fad for those wild and tacky accessories seems to be over. Instead, the focus will be on classic looks from companies such as Dolce & Gabbana.
